Dram buster is a £283k record

-

A WORLD record price has been paid in Hong Kong for a Scotch whisky.

A full cask of Macallan 1987 Single Malt fetched £282,890 at the Spink China auction house last night.

Distilled by The Macallan Glenlivet Distillery on April 13, 1987, cask number 3,335 was matured in a sherry hogshead. It is at present stored in a Macallan bonded warehouse.

This recent sale exceeds the previous record of just under £193,000, also held by a cask of Macallan whisky sold at Spink China auction house in 2014.

The cask does not only hold the title of most expensive cask sold at auction, but it is also the most expensive per-bottle cask sold in auction. It would produce 228 bottles at cask strength, at a price of around £1,000 per bottle.

Patrick Costello, director of Scottish whisky specialist Cask 88, said: ‘Demand for fine and antique whisky is rising.’

Angie Ihlo Fung, auctioneer and whisky specialist at Spink, said: ‘We estimated it would sell for around HK$2.3million (£222,000). ‘As the auction went on, we saw determination from buyers from different parts of the world. It reached a price it deserves.’
