DERREN BROWN (pictured), the mentalist and illusionist, is well aware of the power of music. He sometimes uses music during his act to influence the behaviour of volunteer participants. He loves the mathematical beauty of Bach’s work, and gets passionate when he enthuses about the pieces he loves. All this week for ESSENTIAL CLASSICS (RADIO 3, 9AM), Derren will be talking to Rob Cowan and playing some of his favourite pieces.

THE politics and culture discussion show START THE WEEK (RADIO 4, 9AM, 9.30PM) comes from Moscow, where Tom Sutcliffe talks to Russian journalists about the way the October 1917 Revolution is perceived in Putin’s Russia. THROUGHOUT World War II, fire wardens kept a

constant watch on St Paul’s Cathedral, but on October 9, 1940, the Luftwaffe scored a hit on Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. A bomb pierced the dome and shattered the high altar, yet the rest of the

cathedral was unharmed. In THE FULL WORKS CONCERT (CLASSIC FM,

8PM) Jane Jones marks the anniversary of the event with music inspired by a magnificent building.

MIKE SCOTT, the Scottish musical genius behind The Waterboys will be joining JOOLS HOLLAND (RADIO

2, 11PM) to talk about his career and to pitch in with Jools and his band for a bit of a studio session.
