‘Designed to cause harm’

A SPURNED l over who posted naked pictures and videos of an ex-girlfriend on social media and sent them to her family has been jailed for 16 months. Mohammed Raf i q , 42, uploaded an i mage of the woman showering to her Facebook account.

He then went on to post video footage from which the image had been taken along with a comment that she was a prostitute, including her contact information.

He also sent the video clip – which he made while they were together – to a friend and some of her family through the WhatsApp messenger service.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Rafiq admitted stalking his ex-partner between April 21 and May 19, 2015. Jailing him yesterday, Sheriff Martin Jones, QC, said the charge was ‘extremely serious’ and involved ‘a course of conduct designed to cause maximum harm and upset’.

He also imposed a three-year non-harassment order preventing Rafiq from contacting his victim.

Procurator fiscal depute Adele MacDonald said Rafiq and the 24year-old woman had been in a relationship that ended in May 2014. They had stayed in touch until March 2015 when Rafiq wanted a reconciliation but she did not.

Miss MacDonald said this had resulted in the first incident on April 21, 2015.

A friend of the woman had spotted a naked photo he thought was the victim while on his Facebook page.

Miss MacDonald said: ‘There were comments attached to it that confirmed the image was her and he knew that the image had been shared on Facebook and would potentially be seen by others.’

The woman was made aware of the post and family abroad told her they had seen the photo. She deactivated her account but before that took effect Rafiq uploaded video of her showering.

Miss MacDonald: ‘ By the time she was able to log back in to her account, the video was blank but comments were present and there was a message purporting to be from her, announcing that she was a prostitute looking for clients.’

The woman then reported what happened to the police.

The court heard she was off work for two weeks because of her embarrassment and, after marrying this year, was ostracised by her husband’s family.

Defence lawyer Ron Mackenna told the court that Rafiq, from Glasgow’s West End, was ‘a man who became caught up in emotional circumstances he found himself in’.
