The flexible way to change your life
DESPITE suffering from ME ( also known as chronic fatigue syndrome), Emily Levick has completed her MA in classical studies.
The 31-year-old, from Milton Keynes, had previously gained a 2.1 Open University BA in humanities with English language and classical studies, before she progressed to postgrad study with the OU.
She says: ‘Due to my severe ME, I had to leave school at 15 and couldn’t take my GCSEs. And my c ondition meant I couldn’t work, either.
‘ I ’ ve always l oved history and English, so I decided to register for a degree with the OU.
‘Dad is an OU graduate, so I already understood the teaching and learning methods, and knew the OU offered me the flexibility I needed.
‘And despite my often poor health, I was able to attend the face-toface tutorials and made a lot of friends.
‘There were also Facebook pages for some modules, and they provide a real and welcome sense of community.’
Soon after gaining her degree, Emily began her MA in classical studies in October 2015. ‘ My postgraduate experience with the OU has been incredible, and I have learned to see and think in new ways.
‘My Masters was a lot less daunting than I had originally expected.’
Emily, who is now volunteering at Milton Keynes Museum, adds: ‘I plan to gain further qualifications in museum studies to better equip myself for a career in that field.
‘A few years ago, I would never have imagined I could do anything like this, but my time with the OU gave me confidence and equipped me with so many skills.
‘I’d definitely recommend OU study to anyone considering it. There’s no doubt about it being challenging, but it can change your life, so go for it. I have a lot to thank the OU for.’
