TurkEY must not be served in any canteen or restaurant between December 22 and December 30 inclusive, with the exception of Christmas Day, by order of the Ministry of Food. However, any turkey left over from December 25 may be served on the next day on which the establishm­ent is open.

BrITAIN’S baby boom is over. A shortage of housing, perambulat­ors, rationing and feeding difficulti­es didn’t stop the birth rate soaring in the post-war years. But latest returns show many thousands fewer babies born this year than last. up to last weekend, 362,587 babies were born — 57,066 fewer than last year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

SCArLETT JOHANSSON, 33. The Bafta-winning American actress (pictured), star of Lost In Translatio­n and Girl With A Pearl Earring, was named the highest grossing actor of last year, with her films bringing in £977million in global ticket sales. At the age of seven, she practised acting by staring in the mirror until she made herself cry, wanting to be Judy Garland in Meet Me In St Louis — and was devastated when a talent agent signed one of her brothers, not her.

BORN ON THIS DAY

SIr PETEr HALL (1930-2017). The Suffolkbor­n theatre, opera and film director rose from surprising­ly humble beginnings as the son of a railway station clerk. Yet by 24 he was running his own London theatre, then founded the royal Shakespear­e Company in 1961 and succeeded Laurence Olivier as head of the National Theatre in 1973. He credited his mother for making him feel ‘special’ — describing her as ‘genial and quick-witted’ but something of a ‘tempest’. rOBErT VAuGHN (1932-2016). The actor from New York, best known for playing suave spy Napoleon Solo in The Man From u.N.C.L.E., described one film he starred in, Teenage Caveman, as ‘one of the best worst films of all time’, and his TV series The Protectors as ‘tasteless junk’. At one time he had political ambitions, but said that after the assassinat­ion of Bobby kennedy in 1968, ‘I lost heart for the battle’.

IN 1963, President John F. kennedy was assassinat­ed in Dallas. IN 1990, Mrs Thatcher said she’d stand down as prime minister after 11 years, when her Cabinet refused to support her during a second round of leadership elections. IN 1995, Toy Story, the first feature-length film created using only computer-generated imagery, was released with stars including cowboy Woody (pictured).
