ALICE ROBERTS (pictured) returns for a new round-up of archaeolog­ical finds from around the country. The first selection comes from the West, with a discovery that sheds new light on the mystery of Stonehenge, plus some Iron-Age gold that would inspire awe in the Detectoris­ts (see right).

BIKER TRIP Ride With Norman Reedus, 9pm, AMC

THE Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus loves motorbikes, and his pure happiness at doing this show is part of what makes it nice to watch. Tonight’s stop on his U.S. tour is South Carolina, where Reedus basks in the easy-going atmosphere. (Sky 192, BT TV 332)

WESTERN DRAMA Godless, Netflix

JEFF DANIELS and Michelle Dockery star in Netflix’s slow-burning, dust-blown western, set in a mining town run by women. An outlaw (Jack O’Connell) blunders in, fleeing a vengeful gang, and they aren’t the only threat to come the women’s way over this sevenpart series.

FORTUNE SEEKERS Detectoris­ts, 10pm, BBC4

MORE from the new series of Mackenzie Crook’s comedy, in which Lance (Toby Jones) and Andy (Crook) are both lying to their other halves — and there’s a new suggestion of treasure. It’s to Crook’s great credit that the show continues to stay so firmly rooted in Lance and Andy’s lives and not go off on flights of fancy.

GRUMPY OLD MAN The Rebel, 10pm, Gold

THERE are undignifie­d scenes for Henry (Simon Callow, pictured with Anita Dobson) on his birthday as this comedy continues. The episode features a rant about the NHS helpline that could ring true to anyone who has used it, but Henry’s rage is nicely balanced — and explained — by a poignant scene that digs into his grief at the loss of his wife.

TEST CRICKET Australia v England, 11pm, BT Sport 1

BRISBANE is the venue for the opening day’s play in the five-match Ashes series (live on BT for the first time). A formidable Aussie bowling attack — including Mitchell Starc, fresh from two hat-tricks in one match — awaits England.
