Corbyn’s rage boils over

- By Daniel Martin Policy Editor

JEREMY Corbyn dramatically lost his temper in his Budget response yesterday after a Tory MP made a joke about his age.

The Labour leader started pointing and shouting after the ‘ageist’ and ‘inappropriate’ comment, which came just as he was demanding more cash for elderly care.

It is understood an MP shouted out: ‘You should be in care’ – prompting Mr Corbyn to start jabbing his finger. Raising his voice, he said: ‘The uncaring, uncouth attitude of certain members opposite needs to be called out.’

Labour MP Laura Smith said the jibe was delivered by Tory whip Andrew Griffiths, describing his words as ‘absolutely disgraceful’.

Addressing the Tory MP, Mr Corbyn said: ‘Over £6billion would have been cut from social care budgets by next March. I hope the honourable member begins to understand what it’s like to wait for social care stuck in a hospital bed while other people are having to give up their work to care for them.’

Mr Corbyn accused the Government of ‘tossing fuel on the fire’ in the Budget and predicted that the Chancellor’s spending plans would result in continuing ‘misery’. He added: ‘They call this a Budget fit for the future, the reality is this is a government no longer fit for office.’

Conservative MP Maria Caulfield said: ‘It’s a shame Labour couldn’t bring themselves to welcome any of the measures in this Budget that will help working people.

‘From the abolition of stamp duty for first-time buyers to another income tax cut and rise in the National Living Wage, this Budget leaves people with more money in their pockets.’
