Under-fire MSP’s jungle campaign gets bogged down – in fish guts

- By Alisha Rouse and Rachel Watson

SHE once dreamt of becoming Scotland’s First Minister.

But yesterday Kezia Dugdale kicked off her campaign to become the Queen of the jungle by facing a new kind of opposition – including maggots, raw meat, crabs and pungent fish guts.

Making her debut on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, the former Scottish Labour leader was instantly confronted with a disgusting task – dubbed the Battle of 10 Downing Creek.

She had the challenge of having to race through chambers – including one named Sickola Sturgeon and another called Jeremy Clawbyn – in an attempt to win food for her team.

But having struggled from the outset, she failed to win her way into No10.

Radio host and comedian Iain Lee raced ahead to claim the prize – a luxury camp for his team. It was a disappointing loss for Miss Dugdale, who had been backed by the majority of her campmates.

Unfortunately for the Edinburgh Lothians MSP and her campmates – Jamie Lomas, Vanessa White, Becky Vardy and Georgia Toffolo – this meant they were left sleeping on mats on the jungle floor.

Miss Toffolo told Miss Dugdale they had picked her over Lee because of her ‘jungle election video’ being stronger than his.

She added: ‘I think it’s the politics in you.’

Her run of bad luck continued later when her wrong guess on the final question of a quiz challenge saw her team lose again despite having been neck and neck with their opponents. Their prize, a Victoria sponge cake, was then fed to a pile of insects as they watched.

While Miss Dugdale made her first appearance on the ITV reality show Richard Leonard, made his debut as Scottish Labour leader during First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood.

Miss Dugdale has faced strong criticism from her colleagues, with some calling for her to be suspended from the party.

She was supported by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and even UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, but fellow MSP Neil Findlay described her decision as ‘utterly ludicrous’.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
