Britain’s top ten favourite breeds of dog revealed . . .

Whether you rave about retrievers or go crazy for corgis, we all have a dog breed we love best.

But while this ‘definitive’ list of Britain’s favourite dogs might leave some people barking mad, it does reveal which breed is the nation’s top dog – the labrador.

A survey of 10,000 dog owners has seen these lovable and dependable dogs named the most popular breed in Britain, with figures suggesting there are more than 500,000 sharing our homes.

But in a sign that we’re less concerned about having a pedigree pet these days, mongrels and mutts came in a surprising second as dog owners increasing­ly seek to mix the best attributes of a number of breeds.

the Jack russell came in third, with Staffordsh­ire bull terriers and border collies completing the top five.

the results of the nationwide poll, carried out by the RSPCA and Pet Plan, were revealed last night on ITV’s Britain’s Favourite Dog: the top 100, presented by Ben Fogle and Sara Cox. As a labrador owner himself, Fogle was delighted with the results, saying: ‘the really exceptiona­l thing about labs is that they seem to understand us humans like no other breed, which is why they are probably the most popular assistance dogs in the world.’
