Clubcard crisis! Tesco cuts value of reward points
TESCO has angered customers by watering down the benefits of its Clubcard loyalty scheme without warning.
Under the system, spending at the tills earns shoppers points that can be used for money off groceries, or vouchers for shops such as Halfords and restaurants including Pizza Express.
Some vouchers could be used for up to four times their value, but to ‘make things easier’ Tesco said most are changing to three times their value instead.
The supermarket wrote to its 16million Clubcard holders saying it had ‘simplified’ the rewards – but customers were not convinced. One tweeted: ‘We had £89 saved up in vouchers – worth £356. Now they are worth £267. No advance warning, really really poor.’
Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, said the changes were a ‘slap in the face’ for customers.
He called for those losing out to be allowed to redeem points at their old value, adding: ‘These changes have been made immediately without any notification. Many people save their reward points month after month after month, waiting to redeem on a big item.’
