The selfie obsession fuels gyms

A GROWING obsession with image and healthy living is driving more students and millennial­s to sign up for gym membership­s, according to The Gym Group.

The popularity of social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat has created the so-called selfie generation, teenagers and twenty-somethings obsessed with image and healthy eating.

John Treharne, chief executive of the Gym Group, said: ‘The pressures on young people today to look good is creating some degree of demand.’ Membership numbers increased by more than 35pc to 607,000 in the year to December 31.
