One woman and her dog inspire others to clean up the country

- By Annie Butterworth

‘Response has been amazing’

IT began with one woman wanting to clean up her local area.

Now Lauren Wilson’s war on plastic has inspired eco-warriors worldwide – and although they share a passion for the planet, it is their love for four-legged friends that unites them most.

Miss Wilson’s My Walk, My Bag campaign encour- ages dog owners to carry a bag when they take their pet for a walk, filling it with any rubbish they come across.

At the weekend, nearly 100 people and their pets across the UK – from Skye to Surrey – joined the initiative, which has even attracted interest from the US and Africa.

Miss Wilson, of Dingwall in Ross-shire, launched her campaign through social media page Highland Dogblog. The 6year-old plans to repeat it on the last weekend of every month.

Miss Wilson, who took part with her sprocker spaniel Selkie, said: ‘The response has been amazing. I thought maybe people local to me in the Highlands would take part but we’ve now registered over 100 different locations across the UK.

‘The beauty of it is that people can do it in their own time. There’s no meeting up at a specific time or place, it’s whenever and wherever you like.

‘Plastic bottles have definitely been the number one item collected – and tin cans.’
