A helping hand if you want to care for others

- LINDA WHITNEY

THE home care industry is growing — and experts say it’s easier to enter it with a franchise.

Because it is highly regulated, the help of people with experience of the sector is vital.

Sue MacLaughlin (below), who worked in the leisure industry and is now the Bluebird Care franchisee in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, says: ‘All the policies, procedures and marketing materials were in place, which enabled me to open our doors within months.

‘Bluebird Care’s franchise support covers all aspects of the business, including software, human resources, finance and marketing. A dedicated business development manager and quality manager visit regularly.’

Carole Stubbs, Bluebird Care’s franchise recruitment manager, says: ‘We need entrepreneurs with a strong business background, leadership and people management skills. They must value their staff and want to deliver exceptional service.’

Franchise areas are available in Scotland, Wales and north of Nottingham. The investment is £37,500.

Dawn Phillips, Radfield Home Care franchisee in Bromsgrove and Redditch, says: ‘I worked in care and, when my employer, Radfield Home Care, launched as a franchise, I invested.

‘Even with a care background, I found the franchisor’s support invaluable. If you are considering a care franchise, look for one that gives both startup and ongoing support.’

Radfield Home Care co-founder Dr Hannah MacKechnie says: ‘You do not need care experience, but your main drive must be high-quality service.’ Investment is £25,000, plus working capital of £35,000.
