‘Get tough on 999 attackers’

-

MORE than 900 paramedics and firefighters have been assaulted while saving lives in the past four years.

The figures represent an average of nine assaults every fortnight, sparking calls for tougher sentences for offenders.

Union bosses have demanded legislation so such attacks are treated in a similar way to crimes motivated by racist, sectarian or homophobic hate, with judges able to pass stiffer sentences.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Lewis Ramsay, pictured, said: ‘It beggars belief when I hear that [our firefighters] have been assaulted or verbally abused.’

A Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘The Emergency Workers Act enables penalties of up to 12 months’ imprisonment, a £10,000 fine, or both.’
