Potter Jr wins battle against the best

-

TED POTTER JR claimed his first PGA Tour title for six years with an incredible three-shot win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 34-year-old was tied for the lead with world No 1 Dustin Johnson heading into the final round in California. But while the latter could only muster a level-par 72, Potter Jr followed his stunning 62 on Saturday with a three-under 69. His 17-under-par total was three clear of Australia’s Jason Day and fellow Americans Johnson, Chez Reavie and Phil Mickelson. Potter Jr made a nervous start with a three-putt bogey from inside 20 feet on the opening hole, but he recovered in style, and a chip-in birdie on the seventh put him on the way to his first triumph since landing the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. Potter Jr, world No 246, said: ‘This is unbelievable. It had been a struggle for a while. The whole week has been a blast.’
