Fraudster used fake Cameron driving licence for £1m scam

- By Tom Payne

An Internet fraud gang used a fake David Cameron driving licence in a £1million scam that duped hundreds of victims.

Romanian Dragoz Dragomir, 34, faked identity cards, passports and utility bills to set up hundreds of bank accounts to hold the money they swindled.

A court heard one bogus card featured a picture of the former prime minister with the address 10 Downing Street.

The scam involved hundreds of fake adverts for non-existent goods and services being placed on legitimate classifieds websites, such as eBay. Victims would be asked to transfer money directly to one of the fake bank accounts.

ID cards from Spain, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Poland and Romania were found when police raided rented offices in Enfield, north London.

Officers also discovered printers and computers set up to mass-produce documents and sample ID cards.

Yesterday, at Blackfriars Crown Court, Dragomir was jailed for seven years and six months for conspiracy to commit fraud, conspiracy to money launder, possession of fake ID documents and possession of equipment adapted for making fake ID documents.

Mihai Cirstoiu, 37, of Woodford, east London, who masterminded the scam, was sentenced to six years.

Gang members George Cerneanu, 25, and Georgian Alexandru Stanciu, 27, were both jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Maria Bilici, 33, was jailed for four years for money laundering.
