Murty deals in Windass

- By MARK WILSON

JOSH WINDASS has set his sights on scoring 20 goals this season after becoming the latest Rangers player to agree a contract extension until 2021. The attacking midfielder has netted 12 times during the current campaign and is eager to continue that impact after matching the length of deal penned by right-back James Tavernier earlier this week. Rangers are also trying to

secure Alfredo Morelos on a new contract after rejecting offers of up to £8million from Beijing Renhe, with the striker’s representatives understood to have met with the Ibrox club on Thursday. Windass, however, has already committed his future having flourished since being shifted into a more advanced role following Graeme Murty’s appointment as manager. ‘I feel I have been played in the position I like to play in, and I feel I have improved in terms of goals and assists,’ said Windass. ‘I want to hit 20 goals this season, so hopefully I can get that before the end of the campaign. It’s a big ask but hopefully I can do it. ‘You have always got to improve, even on your strengths. ‘I look to improve my weaknesses, too, every day on the training pitch, and I’ll be looking to do that towards the end of the season. ‘The manager has shown the belief in me that I always had in myself. Hopefully, we will carry our relationship on and push the club forward together. ‘I always feel I have been able to play well under any circumstances but the gaffer has come in and shown a lot of belief in me, which I really appreciate.’ Preston North End had a £500,000 bid for Windass rejected by Rangers in December, while fellow English Championship sides Leeds United and Sheffield United were linked with an interest in the former Accrington Stanley midfielder. The 24-year-old was already under contract at Ibrox until 2020 after signing from the English League Two side in a £60,000 deal in the summer of 2016. Insisting he did not consider a return to England last month, Windass was happy to extend his agreement by a further 12 months after talks with director of football Mark Allen. ‘It’s a good feeling to be rewarded with the form I have been in and, hopefully, I can carry it on,’ he told Rangers TV. ‘I had a couple of years left on my current contract anyway, so I was never going to leave. To get a renewal to that, too, is nice. ‘One of the main reasons behind me renewing my contract was being told by Mark and the club about the vision and the direction they want to go in, and that’s something I want to be a part of. ‘We’ve brought players in like Jamie Murphy, who has come from Premier League level, and that is the level we all want to reach in our career. Getting players in of that calibre can only help you as a player to improve.’
