EU made net losers of our fishing fleet

-

THE Scottish fishing fleet was sacrificed as we became good little Europeans under Prime Minister Ted Heath. It must have been heartbreaking to see a viable Scottish trade ruined while giant factory boats from abroad hoovered up our fish, so no wonder the fishermen are pro Brexit. But as for the idea that the transition deal (Mail) that leaves fishing in the hands of Brussels will drive fishermen to the SNP – no chance! The SNP is an urban party – just look at the shambles it has made of the farm payments scheme. And the Nationalists want to hand control of fishing – and everything else – to the European Union.

I. MILLIGAN, Aberdeen. OUR fishermen have been ‘sold out’, says the SNP (Mail). It strikes me they’re going to have to stick with the EU for an extra 20 months. That’s not ideal, but if we rejoined the EU under the Nationalists, they could look forward to 20 years and more of being told to cut back on catches to let European boats harvest what they like. J. BROWNLEE, Glasgow. THE betrayal of Scottish fishermen shows what a shambles Brexit is. They were promised the EU would be off their backs and it hasn’t happened. How many more industries will go through this, with Brexiteers dreaming of a great future only to deliver false promises?

TOM DRUMMOND, Kirkcaldy, Fife. QUITE something when the SNP accuses the Tories of delivering trawlermen into the hands of the EU. Presumably they’re unhappy because they had the idea first!

SARAH HENDRY, Perth.
