Cummings and I have always played well together

kept them down. I scored my first professional goal and got man of the match, so ever since then it has been more of a superstition.

‘If I score one week, I will keep wearing the same boots and trainers leading up to the next game. If I don’t score then I will change it all. The socks isn’t a fashion thing. I get hammered for it!’

Cummings may be among those poking fun. The two were team-mates at Under-21 level and have made the step-up to the full squad almost in tandem. A fondness for tattoos tightens their bond.

‘I’ve got Tony Montana from Scarface, it’s just my favourite film,’ smiled McBurnie.

‘I think I’ve got about six or seven in total. But Jason has got more.

‘I’ve got on to him a bit about his Joker one, but that is Jason. We are roomies and he is just a fun guy to be around.

‘He doesn’t take himself too seriously. I’d like to think I am a bit the same.

‘We are like two peas in a pod at times. I’ve also got the “Cummings 26” Rangers top now he’s at Ibrox.

‘I love the way he doesn’t care what anyone thinks or says. He just goes out and plays the game like a kid.

‘We have always played well together, through the Under-21s and the like, so I don’t see why we couldn’t still.’

Whatever opportunities come his way against Costa Rica and Hungary, who Scotland face in Budapest next Tuesday, McBurnie is determined to ensure they are grasped.

‘Obviously, Leigh Griffiths is injured at the minute and he is the number one,’ he added.

‘Who knows what will happen? I want to pull on the jersey for my country as many times as I can and score as many goals as I can.

‘I am not just here to make up the numbers. I am here to try and have a positive influence and hopefully stay part of things.’
