Crash teen takes her first steps

- By Abi Garton

A TEENAGER who suffered a broken neck when she was run over in a hit-and-run incident has taken her first steps in hospital only a week after the sickening attack.

Roisin Walker, 14, was one of five children who were hit by a car after the vehicle mounted a pavement.

Family members say that when Roisin spotted a Vauxhall Astra heading towards her and her group of friends she bravely pushed the others out of the way.

The teenager was pulled under the car which then reversed over her during the terrifying incident in Castlemilk, Glasgow, on Saturday March 24.

The youngster underwent a six-hour operation on her neck injury and faces up to eight weeks in a neck brace.

But now she is on the road to recovery and has taken her first steps in hospital, her sister Jamieleigh told the BBC.

She said her sister was recovering well and has made it onto her feet for the first time since she was injured.

The intended victim of the hit-and-run is thought to be a 21-year-old man, who was also struck by the car.

Police are treating the incident as attempted murder and are keen to trace the driver of the silver Astra which was found burnt out about a mile away in Carmunnock. All of the other victims of the attack escaped with only minor injuries.

As well as making a speedy recovery, Roisin has been inundated with visitors at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children.

A friend of the family took to Facebook to ask visitors to give the family warning before they visit, to allow the teenager time to rest.

On Saturday, Caitlin Mullholland wrote on the social media site: ‘Roisin’s recovering quite well. She’s had a rough few days but nothing is fazing her at all.

‘We know everyone is desperate to come see this trooper, but Roisin isn’t getting the rest she needs.’
