Ski cheers but snow is set to bring fresh chaos

- By Sam Walker

THE Easter Weekend is set to end with snowfall and travel chaos today as winter returns and temperatures plummet.

Forecasters warned of blocked roads and disruption to train and bus services due to -8C temperatures overnight and snow from 6am.

But the worst of the weather is set to hit this evening, with treacherous conditions predicted on roads as families return from Easter trips away.

The Met Office is predicting up to six inches of snow on higher ground, prompting the extension of a yellow weather warning until 3pm tomorrow.

AA spokesman Luke Bosdet said: ‘The most difficult aspect of the forecast is the time the worst of the snow is expected to fall.

‘It has been timed to happen late afternoon and early evening, just as people are returning from trips away to see friends and relatives.

‘All we can recommend is the adoption of a contingency plan, so that if the bad weather does hit, you will have worked out how to react.’

He added: ‘It may make sense to wait until conditions improve or, alternatively, leave early to avoid the worst of the weather.

‘If the police issue advice that travel should only be undertaken if absolutely necessary, we suggest you should heed that advice.’

The main routes affected by the snow will be the major arteries to England, the M74 and the A1 from Edinburgh to Northumberland.

Other areas covered by the Met Office snow warning include Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Invernessshire, Lothians and Glasgow.

The Met Office warning for today says: ‘Some roads and railways are likely to be affected, with longer journey times for bus and train services.

‘The snow is likely to be affecting southern parts of the warning area in the morning, spreading northwards later in the day.’

Despite the wintry snap, there is likely to be a respite on Wednesday, with overnight temperatures reaching zero – but more snow is expected to arrive on Thursday.
