TIERNEY WATCH
Mourinho sends United scouts to Hampden as KT interest grows
MANCHESTER United are set to again run the rule over Celtic’s Kieran Tierney in tomorrow’s Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final as Jose Mourinho formalises his summer transfer plans.
Sportsmail understands Mourinho’s trip to Hampden Park last month, when he watched Scotland’s friendly defeat to Costa Rica, had initially been scheduled as a scouting mission.
Tierney had been recommended by Old Trafford scouts and Mourinho was ready to check on the left-back himself before the 20-year-old withdrew from the squad.
United’s Scott McTominay played in that game, but Mourinho’s travel arrangements were finalised before the 21-year-old midfielder had pledged allegiance to Scotland.
Mourinho caught up with former Scotland boss Craig Brown, with whom he became close while studying for his UEFA Pro Licence, and asked about Tierney’s development.
United are now expected to have a scout at Hampden tomorrow afternoon when Celtic face
Rangers in the latest leg of their bid to secure back-toback Trebles. Mourinho has made it clear to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that a new left-back should be seen as a priority this summer given persistent problems with Luke Shaw. Tierney’s versatility provides some additional appeal, while the Old Trafford club also see potential for further long-term development. Tierney (right) has attracted the attention of a number of leading English sides, but has made it clear he is in no rush to depart Parkhead. He signed a new six-year contract last October, a deal which enables Celtic to be firm in their demands should United table a formal offer this summer.
