Ibrox winger Windass on Cardiff radar

- By MARK WILSON

JOSH WINDASS is attracting interest from Cardiff City as they prepare for a return to the English Premier League. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has scored 17 goals for Rangers this term and signed a new contract until 2021 three months ago. However, that form has also gained admirers from south

of the border, with Cardiff weighing up a move after their promotion-winning season in the Championship.

Sportsmail understands Rangers have yet to receive any formal bids for Windass but Burnley could rival Cardiff for the winger’s signature in the summer of change likely to be in prospect as Steven Gerrard prepares to take charge. Windass, who moved to Glasgow on a pre-contract deal from Accrington Stanley in 2016, was the subject of a failed £500,000 offer from Preston North End during the January transfer window. Meanwhile, new Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister says he always felt he would work with Gerrard again following their time together at Liverpool. The former Scotland international midfielder was an Anfield team-mate of Gerrard’s between 2000 and 2002. Sixteen years on, McAllister will now be the ex-England captain’s right-hand man at Ibrox following Gerrard’s appointment as manager on a four-year contract. Speaking at a Liverpool fan event in Dubai, McAllister revealed his pride at the link-up as he looked ahead to formally taking up the reins at Rangers on June 1. ‘First and foremost, it’s a massive compliment to be the guy that Steven asked to come along and be his assistant, so I’m very honoured with the fact he asked me,’ the 53-year-old told Gulf News. ‘I had a feeling — I wouldn’t say it would be the Rangers job — in my blood that at some point before we actually packed up football, we would work together. ‘And it’s happened at a great club up in Glasgow, who have been through a tough few seasons, but hopefully we can make a difference.’ Furthermore, Rangers captain Lee Wallace has visited a specialist in England as he seeks a cure to his injury issues. The 30-year-old hasn’t played a first-team game since suffering a groin problem in September and has been hit by a series of setbacks in his comeback attempts. While Wallace seeks an opinion on whether further surgery is required, his future at Rangers remains mired in doubt. He was suspended by the club along with Kenny Miller following an alleged dressing-room argument with thenmanager Graeme Murty after the 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic last month. An internal investigation is currently being carried out.
