CELTIC v MOTHERWELL, TODAY, KICK-OFF 3PM, HAMPDEN

-

1991

That was the last time Motherwell lifted the Scottish Cup. Goals from Iain Ferguson, the late Phil O’Donnell, Ian Angus and Stevie Kirk secured a 4-3 extra-time triumph over Dundee United in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest finals of all-time.

Celtic stand on the brink of the fifth Treble in their history, which would put them within two of Rangers’ record of seven. Brendan Rodgers could also win his sixth straight trophy. Not bad for someone who had never won any major silverware before arriving at the club.

With 82 points in the final Premiership table, Celtic actually fell four short of the total managed by Ronny Deila in his last season. That points to a fairly underwhelming campaign, but they still have a knack of turning on the style when it matters most. Just look at how they are able to thrash Rangers as and when they please, and how they invariably produce the goods at Hampden these days, a place which was once a graveyard for them.

No one can accuse Motherwell of having had an easy route to Hampden. With victories over Hamilton, Dundee, Hearts and Aberdeen, the Steelmen have defeated Premiership opposition in every round. They have done it the hard way and, despite the odds being stacked against them, will be looking to make it a clean sweep today.
