WHAT TO RIDE IN QUEST FOR THIRD DERBY WIN?

I WANNA horse! The Investec Derby Trials are over now and the picture for Epsom on June 2 is clearer, but I am not sure what I might ride. I am hopeful of picking up a mount to give me a shot at winning the Derby for a third time. I’ve ridden in the race 22 times before. But the boss, trainer John Gosden, has decided Epsom is not for Sevenna Star, the horse on which I won the Sandown Classic Trial, and Epsom Trial winner Crossed Baton, who was subsequently seventh in last week’s Dante Stakes at York. Both head to Royal Ascot. It’s also been decided my Lingfield Derby third Corelli is still learning. He might be a St Leger contender later in the season. John and owner Sheik Fahad Al-Thani have yet to decide whether they will send Roaring Lion to the Derby after he followed his 2,000 Guineas fifth by winning the Dante impressively under jockey Oisin Murphy. The alternative is to send Roaring Lion to the two-furlong shorter French

Derby. I was impressed with him. The pace was slow early in the Dante but the best horse definitely won and Roaring Lion was head and shoulders above everything else. At the moment, the obvious two contenders for the Derby are him and Aidan O’Brien’s 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior.

JUSTIFY is one leg away from completing the American Triple Crown after winning last weekend’s Preakness Stakes.

Bob Baffert’s charge won the Kentucky Derby last month and was able to hold off his rivals in Maryland to set up a chance of being the 13th horse to win all three big races Stateside in next month’s Belmont Stakes.
