Taste The Difference Padthaway Shiraz 2016, £6 (normally £7.50), Sainsbury’s WITH its spicy black fruit flavours, this is one of the stars of the Taste The Difference range. Padthaway in South Australia has a warm climate and rich soils, ideal for making brilliant wines such as this one.
FOOD PAIRING: A spicy dish.
WHITE WINE
Iona Chardonnay 2016, £16, M&S IF YOU love smart white Burgundystyle wine, this Chardonnay from South Africa is worth splashing out on. It’s rich and textured with lots of concentrated stone fruit wrapped in subtle oaky flavours.
FOOD PAIRING: Roast chicken.
ROSÉ
Les Plantagenets Saumur 2017, £8.50, The Wine Society PROVENCE is now the place for pink wines, but there are plenty of hidden gems like this Saumur rosé from the Loire Valley. Made from the Cabernet Franc grape, it’s suitably pale with the requisite subtle redcurrant and white peach fruits. FOOD PAIRING: Salad nicoise.
SPARKLING WINE
Louis Pommery Brut, £39.99, Ocado POMMERY is a French Champagne house, but this is its first attempt at making sparkling wine in England. And it’s a cracker! Made in collaboration with Hattingley Valley, it is spot on, with crisp green apple fruits and a touch of honey and biscuit.
