Nicola: No red carpet, but I’ll see Trump

- By Michael Blackley

NICOLA Sturgeon has urged Theresa May not to ‘roll out the red carpet’ to Donald Trump.

The First Minister yesterday said she has been ‘appalled’ by images of children being separated from their parents and kept in cages while being detained at the US/Mexico border.

But her spokesman later admitted she will consider meeting him in person if he stops off in Scotland during next month’s visit.

Nationalist MSP Ruth Maguire asked the First Minister if it is appropriate for the UK Government to ‘roll out the red carpet for Donald Trump’, given what she described as ‘the shocking reports of families being split up and the heartbreaking scenes of children being detained and caged at the US border’. Miss Sturgeon said: ‘I do not think it is appropriate for the red carpet to be rolled out. Meetings are one thing, perhaps, but red carpet treatment is another.’

The US President is expected to come to Scotland during his UK trip.

He is expected to fly to the UK on July 12 for a dinner following the Nato summit in Brussels.

Asked if the First Minister would see the President if he wanted to meet, a spokesman for Miss Sturgeon said: ‘The FM is on the record as saying she would meet the President, but that is something we can keep under review.’
