Police push to foil car thieves
STATE-of-the-art tracking technology is being rolled out by Police Scotland to help locate stolen cars.
The helicopter and road policing units are to get equipment, from recovery specialists Tracker, that detects signals from stolen vehicles which have been fitted with the firm’s kit, typically placed in a hidden location.
This year, five stolen vehicles have been recovered by officers using the equipment in only a helicopter.
Chief Superintendent Stewart Carle, head of road policing, said: ‘Many high-value cars but also vans, lorries and agricultural equipment are being recovered and people brought to justice.’
Andy Barrs at Tracker said: ‘With car thieves now using increasingly more sophisticated electronic methods to steal vehicles, it’s crucial owners use tracking technology to increase chances of recovery of their vehicle if it is stolen.’
