Hmm. I have long suspected this is how the acting fraternity sees these honours — merely as something to put on the mantelpiec­e of pride or in the humblebrag corner in the downstairs loo, along with your sundry gongs and your Oscars and your TV Quick trophy.

It seems any actress over a certain age, with her own teeth and not totally gaga, will automatica­lly get a damehood. even if they have hated the establishm­ent all their lives, like Helen mirren.

meanwhile, emma Thompson, Diana Rigg, and even Julie (right) herself... admirable women all, but do they really deserve it?
