UK diplomats in crisis meeting over Magaluf balcony deaths

British diplomats have been called to an emergency meeting with spanish officials to discuss the number of balcony falls at a Majorcan party resort.

representa­tives of the Magaluf hotel associatio­n have also been invited to attend the meeting today, which comes after a British holidaymak­er survived a 75ft fall from his hotel hours after England’s World Cup win over Colombia.

two Britons have died in falls in the resort in the past three months. Bar worker Natalie Cormack, from West Kilbride, Ayrshire, fell at the Eden roc apartment block on April 27 after trying to edge her way along an overhang after she discovered she didn’t have keys to get in.

A spokesman for Calvia Council, which covers the Magaluf area, said: ‘Given the concern about the number of people killed or injured in falls in the last few weeks, principall­y in the Punta Ballena area, the council has called a meeting to analyse the problem and see what more can be done.’

those asked to attend the meeting included representa­tives of the British consulate, the Palmanova-Magaluf hotel Associatio­n and central government representa­tives. there have been repeated calls for measures to reduce alcohol consumptio­n by tourists, including banning happy hours and the inclusion of alcohol in allinclusi­ve hotel offers.
