Exhausted Murray sobs after 3-hour tie

- By Courtney Bartlett

AFTER a lengthy layoff that forced him to miss Wimbledon, emotions were running high for Andy Murray during a crunch comeback match yesterday.

And it all became too much for the Scots tennis ace as he broke down in tears after reaching his first quarter final in a year.

An exhausted Murray sobbed after winning the clash at the Citi Open in Washington, DC. He had to come from a set down to win 7-6, 3-6, 6-7 against Romanian Marius Copil in a three-hour match that did not start until midnight.

It was his third three-set victory in four days in only his third tournament since he underwent hip surgery in January.

Murray, 31, from Dunblane, Perthshire, wept into his towel after the win.

In his post-match interview, he made clear his displeasure at being scheduled to play Australian Alex de Minaur only hours later, saying: ‘I don’t think I should be put in a position like that, when you’re expected to come out and perform the next day. I don’t think it’s reasonable.’

He refused to rule out withdrawing from the competition. His mother Judy posted a video of him in tears on Twitter with the caption: ‘Brutal.’
