Tough, Nicola, we are better together

-

WHAT was the point of the meeting between Theresa May and Nicola Sturgeon, other than to spike the Nats’ guns over complaints that they are being kept in the dark about Brexit? Theresa May said the First Minister should back her – she won’t. Nicola Sturgeon says she’s not reassured by Mrs May on a no deal scenario. Well, she would say that. Instead of this stand-off, Mrs May should make it clear that Brexit briefings will be given to the SNP by civil servants behind closed doors, to stop Miss Sturgeon posing as an international stateswoman in front of the cameras. And when next the PM visits Scotland, No 10 Downing Street should – as a courtesy – write to Bute House but make it clear that Miss Sturgeon’s presence is not required. ANDY CAMPBELL, Glasgow. THERESA May and Nicola Sturgeon were never going to appear together in Edinburgh and declare peace. Miss Sturgeon looked like she was choking as she announced the City Deal to pump money into Edinburgh and the South-East thanks to the hated Tories. Her supporters still think Mrs Thatcher is at No 10 and it suits Miss Sturgeon to give that impression. WILLIAM SMITH,

Edinburgh. IF Nicola Sturgeon pushes for Indyref 2, she should step down as First Minister. She has no remit to make such a call and is pushing her party’s agenda, not acting in the best interests of Scotland as a whole. We took her ‘once in a generation’ pledge at face value in 2014 and expect it to be honoured. Brexit has not, as she hoped, driven Scots to the independence cause, and things such as the Edinburgh City Deal announced this week show that we are still Better Together. KIRSTY ANDERSON,

Glasgow.
