SNP accused over its record on the economy

- By Michael Blackley Scottish Political Editor

JEREMY Corbyn has attacked the SNP’s economic record as he begins a four-day tour of Scotland.

The UK Labour leader will today start a series of visits to key target seats north of the Border.

Ahead of the trip, he accused the Tory Government of overseeing the decline of British industry, while saying SNP ministers have ‘not done nearly enough’ to create industrial jobs. He also claimed Labour would boost Scottish manufacturing by ensuring the Government buys British whenever possible.

Mr Corbyn is scheduled to spend this morning at Falkirk-based bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis. Speaking ahead of the visit, he said: ‘The next Labour government will reprogramme the economy to deliver an industrial renaissance for Scotland.

‘The Tories have overseen the decline of our industries and farmed out major public contracts overseas which could have supported jobs at home. Meanwhile, the SNP Government has not done nearly enough to grow Scotland’s industrial base or the green economy.

‘Labour will boost Scottish manufacturing, which will support jobs and living standards. It’s time the Scottish people had a government with the determination to create an economy for the many, not the few.’

But SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said: ‘It is no wonder Labour are slumping when all they have to offer Scotland is fewer jobs, lower wages, and squeezed living standards.

‘Jeremy Corbyn’s fantasy claims on the economy are not credible while Labour back the Tories’ hard Brexit plans.’
