Call time on free booze for drunks

-

ONLY four months ago, after years of strife and litigation, the SNP eventually forced its 50p a unit minimum alcohol price into action – leaving the responsible majority out of pocket – allegedly to deter problem drinkers.

Now (Mail) the Nationalists propose to dish the stuff out to the said problem drinkers for free in annexes to their drug ‘shooting galleries’.

Charles Bannerman, Inverness.

ONLY in Scotland, and only under the SNP, could we have a policy of minimum pricing per unit of alcohol to stop sensible drinkers enjoying a drink at home and then a proposal to hand out free drinks on prescription to addicts and binge drinkers.

PhIl Johnson, Bishopton, renfrewshire.

FREE alcohol for street drinkers and free heroin for junkies (Mail).

This would be fine in a country where cancer patients get all the drugs they need no matter the price, and where no pensioner has to decide between eating and heating. JIm mClaughlIn, glasgow.

INSTEAD of wasting money on shooting galleries and free bars for alcoholics, the SNP would be better spending the money on mental health services.

For many on the streets, a mental health issue lies at the heart of their addiction, whether it be to drugs or to alcohol.

Clare DrummonD, Dunfermline, Fife.
