Qatar Racing splash £3.7m on a Hot colt!

- By MARCUS TOWNEND Racing Correspondent

THE full brother of Saturday’s unbeaten Darley Dewhurst Stakes favourite Too Darn Hot became the most expensive yearling sold in Europe this year when bought by Qatar Racing for 3.5million guineas (£3,675,000) yesterday. In a hushed Tattersalls sales ring in Newmarket, the final bid on the colt by Dubawi was made by Qatar Racing manager David Redvers, on behalf of Sheik Fahad and his brothers. Redvers immediately dropped a heavy hint that the new purchase would be put in training with Too Darn Hot’s trainer John Gosden. Qatar Racing have enjoyed their most successful season since they entered the sport, largely thanks to Gosden-trained Roaring Lion. Since finishing third in the Derby, Roaring Lion has won the Eclipse Stakes, International Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. After landing what looks certain to be the most expensive purchase at the three-day Tattersalls Book 1 sale, Redvers said: ‘Sheik Fahad and his brothers want the very best. They have had a major taste of what it is like having the very best this year with Roaring Lion. ‘You can draw your own conclusions about where he likely to be trained. If he is as good as his full brother he is a cheap horse.’ The price fell short of the European record for a yearling of 5m guineas paid for Galileo filly Al Naamah in 2013 by another Qatari organisation, Al Shaqab Racing. She won one of her seven races. Bred at the Watership Down stud of Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber, Qatar Racing’s latest purchase is also the brother of this season’s St Leger runner-up Lah Ti Dar. His dam is three-time Group One winner Dar Re Mi. Meanwhile, Too Darn Hot will face Aidan O’Brien’s Anthony Van Dyke in the Dewhurst after O’Brien decided to go with the National Stakes runner-up rather than his Middle Park Stakes winner Ten Sovereigns.
