Coil fitted without woman knowing
A VULNERABLE young woman was fitted with contraception without her knowledge to protect her against pregnancy if she was sexually exploited.
The woman – thought to have been a victim of sexual assault – has also been placed under thorough supervision and banned from seeing her new boyfriend alone, court documents have revealed.
But a judge in the Court of Protection has ruled that the woman may not be told about the contraceptive coil she carries because if she knew, it ‘would cause very considerable harm to her relationships with professionals and her family on whom she is utterly dependent’.
The attempts to shield the young woman both from sexual exploitation and its possible consequences have been ordered by Lord Justice Baker in a series of hearings. The judge said both the contraception and the attempt to protect the woman – who has learning difficulties – will be kept under review by the courts.
The contraceptive device was fitted in 2012 while the woman was sedated after social workers raised concern about that she was a target for sexual exploitation.
