Salute to their fallen, the cloak of 9,000 poppies knitted by villagers

-

IT is a tiny village which lost 13 of its sons during the Great War.

Now, a century on from the conflict’s end, residents of Carmunnock, on the outskirts of Glasgow, have covered their local church with a cloak of 9,000 knitted poppies in honour of the soldiers who fought and died.

Members of Carmunnock Parish Church spent more than eight months on the project.

Sandra Hawkins, who led the initiative for Remembrance Day, said: ‘One lady knitted 517 poppies to show respect to those who fought in the war.

‘We want to show tribute to them and especially to those who came from our village.’
