Dancing politicans? What a scream...

- By Dean Herbert

DURING a music career spanning almost four decades, he has put in hundreds of energetic performances on stages across the world.

But the sight of two ageing politicians performing a novelty dance routine with a BBC presenter was enough to stop Primal Scream rocker Bobby Gillespie in his tracks.

The 56-year-old sat stock still as former Tory defence secretary Michael Portillo and Labour MP Caroline Flint rounded off a political chat show with a performance of the Skibidi challenge internet dance craze.

The bemused look on the singer’s face as the politicians danced around the This Week studio with host Andrew Neil was branded ‘TV moment of the year’ on social media. Glasgow-born Gillespie had been invited on the show to discuss the consequences of a ‘hard Brexit’.

During a brief discussion he claimed: ‘Politically, we’re going backwards, we’re going back to the Thirties.’

However, as the credits rolled, Mr Neil, Miss Flint and Mr Portillo began to perform the Skibidi challenge, a viral dance created by the satirical group Little Big. The routine was performed to a backdrop of Gillespie sitting perfectly still and staring into space.

Stills of the singer’s bemused expression were shared thousands of times across social media, with one user saying she ‘could not breathe’ for laughing.

Gillespie formed Primal Scream in 1982 and the band found fame eight years later with the release of their groundbreaking album Screamadelica.
