GE­ORGE El­li­son of the 5th Royal Ir­ish Lancers sur­vived four years of hor­rific trench war­fare only to be killed min­utes be­fore hos­til­i­ties ceased.

The for­mer miner, 40, was shot at 9.30am on Novem­ber 11, 191 on horse­back while on a pa­trol on the out­skirts of Mons, Bel­gium.

He left a wife Han­nah and a son James, who had his fifth birth­day just a few days af­ter his fa­ther’s death.
