THIS IS 50 WHAT LOOKS LIKE

- By FLORENCE SCORDOULIS

Jacquie TyleR lives in Hertfordshire. She runs a pet service with her daughter, annie, 23, and she also has a son, Ben, 25.

FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS

AT 45, I was diagnosed with a sarcoma, a type of cancer. At the same time, I was nursing my husband through cancer, too. He died in 2016. It was devastating. I stay positive by surrounding myself with positive people. I have a strong support network of five close female friends. I couldn’t have got through it without them. We go out most weekends for a meal or drinks; and often go clubbing. On my 50th, we came home at 5am!

DIY HOME GYM

I HAVE a mini gym in my garden shed with a treadmill, rowing machine, arm weights and a power plate — a vibrating platform to work out on which tones muscle. I have the radio on so it doesn’t feel like exercise. I use it for 30 minutes, three times a week. It definitely beats going to the gym.

LUSCIOUS LONG HAIR

I DON’T believe in rules about hair length as you get older. I love my long hair — look at celebrities such as Goldie Hawn, Elle Macpherson and Jo Wood. The key is to keep it in good condition. I get mine cut at Toni & Guy three times a year. I’ve also switched to organic products: my favourite is DGJ Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner (£5.49 each, waitrose.com) for amazing volume.

MIDLIFE PET THERAPY

I SET up my dog-walking and pet-sitting business after my husband died. It was a way of coping and gave me a new focus. I had to do a lot of research and take a course. But it pushed me out of my comfort zone. I find it so therapeutic to be around animals. They bring me so much joy.

LOVE YOUR BODY

THIS summer, I went to Ibiza with my cousin and both of our daughters. It was my first holiday in seven years, since my husband’s illness. I was initially worried about wearing a bikini, as I was self-conscious about the scars from my cancer operation. But I’ve realised they’re proof of my strength in overcoming the disease. It was so empowering. I’ll do it every year now. We should embrace getting older.
