more than 40 years, scientists have been trying to work out the precise make-up of the protective tear film that covers our eyes, in the hope of finding a more effective treatment for dry eyes.

Now, Australian researchers have discovered the structure of lipids called OAHFAs within this oily substance, which slows the evaporation of water and keeps eyes moist.

Writing in the Journal of Lipid Research, they say these lipids are essential for the smooth spreading of the tear film and that this knowledge could help improve eye drops.
