THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO THE EURO 2020 DRAW

- ALAN DOUGLAS

TOMORROW Scotland and Alex McLeish (below) find out who their opponents in Euro 2020 qualification will be. They are already guaranteed a play-off spot after winning their Nations League group, but can qualify automatically by finishing in the top two of their qualifying group. The draw will take place at 11am in Dublin.

HOW DOES THE DRAW WORK?

The 55 teams will be drawn from six pots into ten qualifying groups: five groups of five teams and five groups of six teams. The four Nations League finalists, including England, will be in five-team groups. The top two teams from each group will qualify for Euro 2020.

WHO IS IN EACH POT?

Pot 2 — Germany, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Austria, Wales, Czech Republic. Pot 3 — Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, SCOTLAND, Norway, Serbia, Finland, Bulgaria, Israel. Pot 4 — Hungary, Romania, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Georgia. Pot 5 — Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus, Luxembourg, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Gibraltar, Faroe Islands. Pot 6 — Latvia, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Malta, San Marino.

AND THE WORST CASE?

France, Germany, Greece, Macedonia, Latvia.

WHO IS HOSTING EURO 2020?

There are 12 host cities: Glasgow, London, Baku, Copenhagen, Munich, Budapest, Rome, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bucharest, St Petersburg and Bilbao.

WHEN ARE THE QUALIFIERS?

There are two games in March, two in June, two in September, two in October and two in November.

WHAT ABOUT THE PLAY-OFFS?

With 20 teams qualifying automatically for Euro 2020, the final four places at the tournament will be filled by the play-off winners from the Nations League. The 16 teams who won their Nations League groups are guaranteed a play-off spot. Therefore, Scotland are assured of a play-off even if they don’t finish in the top two in their Euro 2020 qualifying group. If a Nations League group winner does finish in the top two of their qualification group, their play-off spot will go to the nextbest ranked side from the Nations League who have not qualified for the Euros.
