DONS TARGET IBROX WIN

- By BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

ANDY CONSIDINE has called on Aberdeen to ease the hurt of their narrow Betfred Cup final loss by beating Rangers at Ibrox tomorrow night. Derek McInnes’ side ran Celtic close at Hampden on Sunday but were undone by Ryan Christie’s goal on the cusp of half-time. The Dons have no time to feel sorry for themselves, however, ahead of their trip to Govan to face Steven Gerrard’s Premiership leaders. Aberdeen have already drawn 1-1 with Rangers at

Pittodrie this season and beat Gerrard’s side in the semi-final of the Betfred Cup at Hampden in October. ‘Ibrox is probably the one place you would want to go after a defeat like this — it’s a chance to put it right,’ said Considine. ‘If there’s a way to make ourselves feel better, it’s to go there and get a win. ‘The Aberdeen supporters were fantastic on Sunday. They came down in serious numbers to Hampden and they were right behind us. They sang all game, so they deserve a result come the Rangers game. ‘It’s disappointing because we’ve got closer and closer to Celtic. ‘It feels like we’re within touching distance. Yes, Celtic are still ahead of everyone else, but when we go toe to toe with them, there’s so little in it. ‘So when we lose games as close as the final was, it hurts more than it used to.’ Meanwhile, Dons winger Gary MackaySteven was yesterday discharged from hospital after suffering a horror head knock in the final. Mackay-Steven was knocked out after a sickening accidental clash of heads with Celtic’s Dedryck Boyata in the first half. Dons captain Graeme Shinnie described it as: ‘One of the worst injuries I’ve ever seen since I started playing football.’ After receiving treatment on the pitch for nine minutes, Mackay-Steven was taken off on a stretcher before being rushed to hospital. The 28-year-old suffered concussion and McInnes says he will miss the match against Rangers at Ibrox. Aberdeen’s medical team will continue to assess the player, with the Dons next facing St Johnstone at home on Saturday.
