Ideal home to deck in festive glory

- by Paul Drury

SOME homes were just made for Christmas. Take Ardgilzean House, for example. Sitting in 27 acres of lush, wooded countryside, it has no fewer than two halls – both perfect for decking with boughs of holly.

The entrance hall currently resembles a scene from a Christmas card, with wall-to ceiling wood panelling and tree nestling beneath a grand wooden staircase.

There is also a large wood-burning stove in the corner of the hall, guaranteeing an atmospheric welcome.

Throw in a warming glass of punch at the front door and you’ve got the party started before guests have even got their coat off.

Ardgilzean, just outside Elgin, Moray, dates from 1897. This places it within the Victorian era, when so many enduring Christmas traditions were formed. Ardgilzean’s wood-panel theme is continued into another wonderful space for entertaining – the magnificent billiards room, which has superb views over the gardens.

The nearby sitting/TV room offers a large open fire and beautiful windows, decorated with stained glass. In keeping with the design of the times, the two formal, front-facing public rooms lie off the hallway.

It is testament to current and previous owners that scant alteration to these has taken place over the years. This allows us continued appreciation of the drawing room, complete with bay window and fireplace with an open fire, and the adjoining dining room, which has a wealth of original features.

As well as the aforementioned grand staircase, there is a maids’ staircase next to the kitchen.

The upper level has a spacious master bedroom with en suite bathroom. Ardgilzean has six further bedrooms, two of which offer en suite facilities, plus a family bathroom.

In case you still feel there is not enough room, a terrific development opportunity exists within a range of outbuildings. The former stables are in need of refurbishment but with the correct permission, could make a fantastic home office or self-contained visitors’ accommodation.

In addition, there is a detached garage block with four garages, storage and a large summer house.

The local climate has led to the Moray coast being referred to as ‘the Riviera of the North’.

But for now, it is best to revel in Ardgilzean House as the perfect Christmas property.
