Saints close in on record unbeaten run

- BRIAN MARJORIBANKS

ST JOHNSTONE will equal a club record of nine consecutive matches unbeaten in the top flight if they avoid defeat to Motherwell today. The Saints have managed that feat just three times in their history and boss Tommy Wright will join previous managers Tommy Muirhead, Bobby Brown and John McClelland if his side avoid a slip-up at McDiarmid Park. But Wright, who led Saints to their first and only Scottish Cup win in 2014, insists his focus is more on gaining points than writing another chapter in the Perth club’s history. ‘It hasn’t been in our thoughts at all,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to belittle records but it doesn’t really mean anything. What matters is where we finish up at the end of the season. Of course we want to keep the run going but the unbeaten record isn’t something that’s been mentioned. ‘Our focus is on a tricky Motherwell side and ensuring that we maintain our performance levels. If we do that then I know we can get a positive result.’
