Husband butchered wife and her mother

- By Claire Duffin

A VIOLENT husband has been jailed for 32 years after hunting down and butchering his wife and mother-in-law when she tried to end their marriage.

Janbaz Tarin, 21, who had a history of abusive behaviour, had been ordered by the courts to stay 100metres from his estranged wife Raneem Oudeh, 22.

But on the night of her death, during an evening out with her mother, the student made repeated desperate calls to police as Tarin stalked her around Birmingham.

CCTV footage shown during the trial at Birmingham Crown Court showed Tarin’s van following Miss Oudeh and her mother, Khaola Saleem, a 49-year-old mother of six, first to her sister’s house and then to a shisha bar in the city centre.

At the bar, Tarin confronted Miss Oudeh when another man offered to buy her a tea. He also slapped Mrs Saleem. As he left, witnesses saw him making a throat-slitting gesture towards Miss Oudeh.

Afghan-born Tarin then went to his father’s shop and took a 12in steak knife from the meat counter.

After the attack in the shisha bar, Miss Oudeh was told by police to go her mother’s house for safety. But before officers could get to her, Tarin arrived. Miss Oudeh, on the phone to the police at the time, was recorded saying: ‘He’s there, there,’ before the phone went silent.

The attack was captured on CCTV, in which Miss Oudeh could be seen lying on her back. As Mrs Saleem tried to protect her daughter, Tarin stabbed her. The mother and daughter died from dozens of knife wounds to the arms, chest and neck.

Yesterday, as Tarin was ordered to serve a minimum of 32 years after admitting double murder, the women’s devastated family accused the police and social services of failing to do more when they were informed that he had been beating Miss Oudeh for months.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Payne said investigations were taking place into those who sheltered Tarin.
