The bicycle that can order a takeaway on your ride home!

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

IN the good old days, doing up your bike meant adding a fancy horn, a water bottle holder and maybe one of those awesome speedos.

But the world of cycling has come a long way since Shoppers and Choppers ruled the road.

The latest smart bike uses Amazon’s Alexa to give voice directions, play music – and even order a takeaway for you to collect on the way home.

The Cybic, which comes as a basic pedal cycle or an electric bike, will be unveiled at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the global showcase for new technology.

It has built-in GPS mapping, LED lights and an integrated 4in touchscreen on the handlebars.

While on the move, cyclists can ask Alexa – the voice-activated virtual assistant developed by Amazon – for traffic updates, weather forecasts, to send messages and create shopping lists.

There is an electronic horn and the bike can play music and communicate with the rider via a builtin speaker and two microphones.

Cyclists can even download music or audiobooks from their smartphone to the bike to give them something to listen to while on the move. The technology is powered by a generator in the rear wheel hub, and the bike includes a built-in lock controlled by a smartphone app and the touchscreen, as well as a tracking device that sends its location to your phone if it is stolen. The on-board computer, which connects to the internet using a Vodafone SIM card and the mobile phone network, can keep a record of journeys, including speed, altitude and calories burned. It will also develop training programmes so users can measure their performance.

David Kumar, from Alexa Voice Services, said: ‘The combination of Alexa and Cybic enables riders to enjoy a great range of innovative, integrated bike features without their hands having to leave the safety of the handle bars.’

Halfords has exclusive rights to sell the Cybic, which was developed in China, with prices starting at an estimated £1,500. It is due to go on sale in the summer.

Halfords bike expert Andy Whitehall said: ‘We’ve seen innovations in alternative commuting go from strength to strength.

‘The next big trend for commuters will be smart bikes. The Cybic contains all the features you love about Alexa, but in a bike.’
