I’m back to win more trophies at Rangers

SAYS STEVEN DAVIS

- By MARK WILSON

STEVEN DAVIS has set his sights firmly on winning more honours with Rangers after completing his desired return to Ibrox.

The 34-year-old midfielder has agreed a six-month loan deal from Southampton and met up with Steven Gerrard’s squad at their winter training camp in Tenerife yesterday.

Davis won three league titles, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups during a hugely successful first spell at the club between 2008 and 2012.

With fellow loanee Jermain Defoe also checking in last night, the Northern Ireland captain feels the Ibrox outfit is well placed to push for silverware in the second half of the season.

Reflecting on his initial stint at Rangers, Davis said: ‘It was a great period for the club, a great period for me personally in my career as well. Those are memories I will want to try and replicate once again.

‘That’s why you come to Rangers, to challenge for trophies on a regular basis and I think the squad is capable of doing it.

‘So I’m looking forward to seeing up close the players and getting to know each other on and off the pitch. Hopefully, come the end of the season, with a lot of hard work, we can achieve something.

‘This camp is a perfect opportunity for me to be away with the group in a confined space for a period of time.

‘It will be a really good chance for me — and obviously Jermain as well — to get to know the boys a lot better.

‘I know one or two faces already and, hopefully, I’m not rooming with one of them! But it’s great to be here and looking forward to the future.

‘Jermain’s record speaks for itself. It doesn’t need selling to anybody.

‘He has scored goals wherever he’s gone and anybody I’ve known that’s played with him has said what a good finisher he is.

‘He’s going to be a great addition to the squad and I’m sure he will bang in plenty of goals for the team.’

Davis had only played six times for Southampton this season and is eager to resume regular football when Rangers seek to build upon their recent Old Firm triumph.

‘You miss playing and obviously I haven’t had the game time I’d have liked in the last six months, so I can’t wait to get out there on the pitch,’ he told Rangers TV.

‘Hopefully, it won’t take me too long to get up to speed.

‘I feel quite good physically, so it’s just that bit of sharpness you get from games that you can’t get from training.

‘But I’m looking forward to getting a good week of training under my belt this week. I’m sure once we get back (to Scotland) we will all be raring to go. ‘The team have done an excellent job. They’ve started pre-season early on with the qualifiers in Europe and were very unlucky not to qualify from the group as well. ‘Domestically, they’ve put in a really strong first half of the season. There’s a lot of hard work to do but I think we are on the right track.’

Davis, who will wear the No10 jersey, insisted moving back to Glasgow was his preferred option from the moment he learned Gerrard was keen.

‘It’s been a little while in the making but, when I found out the club was interested, this is the one that I wanted to happen,’ he added.

‘I found out there was interest a little while back and talks were ongoing between the two clubs to try to come to a conclusion.

‘Then, when the decision is made, it all happens very quickly. So obviously I’m delighted to get it agreed last night and I was straight on the flight this morning to get out here.’
