Department store to shut after 120 years

- By Campbell Thomas

A LANDMARK department store is to close after more than 120 years, with the loss of 81 jobs.

In a move described as ‘truly heartbreaking’ by civic leaders, Hourstons, of Ayr, will shut on February 7 – the latest town centre business to be axed.

Douglas Campbell, leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: ‘Hourstons is synonymous with Ayr High Street and its loss will be felt throughout South Ayrshire and beyond.

‘Coming so soon after the announcement that HMV has gone into administration, this really is a very grim start to the New Year for the town centre in Ayr.

‘Our focus right now is on doing everything we can to support those people who will soon be out of work.’

He added: ‘This is a truly heartbreaking day for Ayr town centre and especially for the members of staff who are set to lose their jobs.’

The store was opened in 1896 by David Hourston of Orkney. On his death in 1917 his two sons took over what was then one of Scotland’s largest retail drapery establishments. Its tearooms and roof gardens became known across the country.

In April 1949, it was taken over by House of Fraser. It underwent changes over the years until the name reverted to Hourstons.

A recent TripAdvisor review said: ‘Was the only customer on the top floor. Considering only a few days before Christmas, wonder how long it can stay open.’

Hourstons had not issued a statement last night but managers confirmed that the store was closing down.
