We want Alex! MP joins calls for comeback

A SENIOR Nationalist MP has appeared to back calls for Alex Salmond to be ‘back at the helm’ of the SNP as a bitter feud within the party deepened.

Edinburgh MP Joanna Cherry joins a growing list of key Salmond allies, such as Angus MacNeil, Kenny MacAskill and Alex Neil, who would like to see him return to politics.

Miss Cherry yesterday backed a call on Twitter for the former Nationalist leader to be ‘back at the helm’ of the SNP. She later removed her support from the posting.

Scottish Conservative chief whip Maurice Golden said: ‘Joanna Cherry has nailed her colours firmly to the mast. It shows the civil war with the SNP is deepening by the day.’

Mr MacAskill this week claimed that there are some within the SNP working to remove those who could be seen as ‘tainting’ Miss Sturgeon’s image.

An SNP spokesman said: ‘There is currently an ongoing police inquiry and we will make no further comment.’
